Thankful for a no

November 15, 2014 By Field Missionary

Recently we received a No.  It wasn’t nice to hear, and it wasn’t the answer we wanted.  When we heard it, I felt disappointed…and I sat in my disappointment for a little while, until I remembered that disappointment can grow into resentment, and then it can get in the way of relationships, which is not what God wants for us.  More importantly, I felt God brought me out of that place of disappointment to a place of thankfulness.  This is what I learned…

Sometimes Nos are opportunities for other things.

The first thing I realized is that the more Yeses we get in life, the less opportunities we have to put our trust in God’s promises.  I wanted the Yes, because it would’ve made things easier for us.  But, as you know, things are not just handed to us, and things in life are not easy. But God promises to be there with us, in it.  Having a No allows us to practice our trust in God.

In fact, it wasn’t the first No we got regarding our situation, and I began to feel a bit defeated.  So, I reached out to a friend here in Croatia, and the more we talked, the better I felt.  Sometimes Nos allow us to rely on others, for comfort, for resources, for advice.  Maybe our No was in fact actually a result of an unfortunate system, but I’ve learned that others are just as frustrated as we are.  I discovered that other friends were also told No.  I began to see that others are struggling like we are, that this situation in general is just not easy.  We will make sacrifices like others do.  Sometimes Nos allow us to identify better with those around us.

So, we are on the path to making a final decision regarding our situation.  We had to make a decision, in spite of the No, that was best for our family, and we are making it on faith.  So, sometimes Nos provide us an opportunity to have Faith!  And while I have no idea how things will work out, I have faith in a God who has been faithful to us, faith in a God who makes a covenant with His people to never leave nor forsake them.  And I know that somehow, in some way, it will be taken care of.

So, there you have it.  Nos aren’t nice to hear, but I believe they are opportunities to see God working in ways that are just completely out of our control, in ways we could never expect or imagine.  So, I’m excited to watch God work, and I’m thankful for our No.
