Michigan Update 8-10

November 3, 2012 By Field Missionary

It’s been a busy time for the team over the last few days. On Thursday (Nov 1), most of the team worked a half-day and then spent the evening evangelizing in a somewhat unique way. November 1st is All Saints Day, and they celebrate it much differently that we celebrate our Halloween in the US. They do have our traditional “Trick-or-Treat” celebration, but the real focus on All Saints Day here in the Philippines (and other places around the world) is to celebrate the lives of loved ones that have passed on.

The family and extended family will gather together at the gravesite of a loved one and, for lack of a better description, have a party. They bring food & drinks, games, tents or some sort of covering, and they talk about their loved ones and pray for them. They pray that God will allow them into Heaven (because they are in purgatory ).

There was a church that was already planning on walking through the crowd and handing out tracts, so our team members went out with their team members and evangelized. We spent about an hour and half planting seeds and spreading the Word. One group led four people to Christ! I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be evangelizing in a cemetery, much less leading people to Christ. Oh where the Lord will take you when you listen and obey!

Michigan Update 5-7

October 31, 2012 By Field Missionary

Hello everyone! However much I wanted to just go to bed after a long day, I really need to send out an update.

Over the past three days we’ve mostly had the team working on the Cobb Worship Center, which is what they came over to work on. But we have had some of the team work in the library and some go to a nearby orphanage/birthing center and love on some really cute kids.

The work on the CWC has been trying for the team. The first couple of days was spent running around trying to get the right tools and materials for the job. You need to know that finding the right tool for the job is quite different around here. You can’t just jump into your car and drive to Lowes/Menard’s/Home Depot and pick up what you need. It can literally take a half-day just to get to the right hardware store that may or may not have the item you’re looking for.

Michigan Day 3&4

October 28, 2012 By Field Missionary

Sorry for not posting an update yesterday. It was quite a hectic day that didn’t end until around 11:30pm. That didn’t leave me much time to write an update.

Yesterday, Saturday, was a work day, but I really need to use “work” loosely.

You see, it was a holiday and we didn’t have any of the local workers with us and we didn’t have the right tools or even all the materials we needed to get the job going. So we spent the majority of the day looking for things just to get started. Very frustrating and poor planning on my part!

To make matters worse, Pastor Wil was carrying some drywall and stepped down funny on his heel and hurt his knee. He didn’t fall, but he could hardly walk after that. We had to help him up the stairs and got him a nice comfortable chair to sit in. He propped up his leg and we placed so ice on it. Our hope was that it wasn’t too serious and that he would be up and at ’em again in the afternoon.
